Register Your Domain
The first step to successfully promoting your business on the internet is to register a domain name so that you own your very own permanent, instantly recognizable web address.
If you register a domain such as www.mybusiness.co.uk, this is owned by you and in addition to the www.yourbusiness.co.uk web address, it means that you are also entitled to use e-mail addresses associated with your domain such as – for example – sales@mybusiness.co.uk. You own the domain and your email addresses will never change unless you want them to. It is important to remember that, if you are using and promoting the e-mail address given to you by your current internet service provider (ISP) (i.e. mybusiness@btinternet.com), you do not own this email address, and if you change internet service providers, you will lose it.
This has massive implications for your letterheads, adverts, brochures and directory type entries. You can place your domain details on these with complete confidence that they will never change, regardless of which ISP you use to connect to the internet. It plays a vital role in the ongoing marketing of your on-line presence and the best names combine who you are with what you do.
If you are a UK based organization and are only interested in the UK market, you should register a .co.uk domain name. If you have worldwide aspirations, you should register a .com domain name. If in doubt, there is a good argument for suggesting that you should register both. You can always release them in the future, but at least it will be your decision to make.
Note: all of our web design packages include the cost of registering your domain name, and we would seek to secure your chosen domain name as the first stage of the design process.
